MAT began as Music in the Parks, with pop-up concerts around town and collaborations with local artists. As it grew in scope, MAT began to pair with senior centers, schools, and community organizations. During COVID, Music Around Town used their reach to support first responders, soup kitchens, and community centers, and performed at fire stations, banks, and hospitals. MAT has now broadened to offer programs that include innovative arts experiences at locations throughout Flint, with special celebrations for Juneteenth and the 4th of July, and partnering with artistic and cultural organizations like the Arab American Heritage Council, the National Arab Orchestra, Sphinx, the Flint Jewish Federation, and LatinX.
Music Around Town events encourage community spirit and strength through the shared language of music. Friends and family are invited to spend time together at local events, experiencing the joy of MAT artists who act as cultural ambassadors, highlighting the beauty and unity of Flint’s community. Music Around Town reflects Flint’s resilient story of hope and possibility through its performances and community gatherings.

Music Around Town is a year-round commitment to engaging Flint and Genesee County with music, theatre, and dance. We partner with community groups, non-profit organizations, healthcare providers, and citywide events to uplift, entertain, and transform our community through the performing arts. With generous funding from the C.S. Mott foundation, we book local artists to perform and promote community events and activities. Keep an eye on FIM social media accounts and check back on this page for the most up-to-date information about these “pop-up” performances.

Flint Under the Stars is a donation-based concert series held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month under the starry dome of the Capitol Theatre. Each month, we use the stage of this historic theatre to spotlight talent in Flint and surrounding communities.
As part of our Music Around Town programming, Flint Under the Stars aims to contribute to the revitalization of beautiful downtown Flint while creating new access to performing arts experiences and spaces. Most importantly, all donations benefit the KidsTix program. To further promote the future of performing arts in Flint and beyond, KidsTix removes financial barriers for families to attend FIM shows and has the power to inspire the next generation of performers.
The series is generously funded by the CS Mott Foundation and the Genesee County Arts, Education and Cultural Enrichment Millage.

The Friday Night Patio series at the Flint Institute of Arts is a cherished community partnership that capitalizes on the beauty of the cultural center campus to create a casual space for fellowship, refreshment, and creativity. There’s no better place in town to “wine down” on a Summer Friday than the patio of the FIA while live music drifts through the air, lifting spirits as much as the beverages served by the Palette Café. Music is provided as part of the Music Around Town program at FIM and generously funded by the CS Mott Foundation. Come early for a seat on the patio or bring a lawn chair to enjoy the show from the lawn every Friday in July and August.
Do you know someone interested in being the featured performer at one of these outdoor concerts? Please send an email with “FIA Patio Series” in the subject line to: info@thefim.org
At FIM, we love opportunities to recognize a sparkle and give it a space to shine! Inspired by the annual Seeing Stars! Benefit through the Flint School of Performing Arts, Summer Stars creates an opportunity to encourage young talent in Flint and surrounding communities by providing a performance space and professional experience for student performers.
During the summer months, young people take the outdoor stage at On the Bricks (formerly Xolo) in Downtown Flint to showcase their budding—and impressive—talent. Selection for this program is not just restricted to the Flint School of Performing Arts, but open to all area youth (age 18 and under) with a passion for performance.
As part of our Music Around Town programming, Summer Stars aims to contribute to the revitalization of beautiful downtown Flint while fostering an enthusiasm for performing arts in area youth. The series is generously funded by the CS Mott Foundation and the Genesee County Arts, Education and Cultural Enrichment Millage.

Performing arts provide a lifetime of joy, connection, and transformation. At FIM, we cherish every stage of that journey, and we recognize the incredible value our senior community adds to our lives. We are privileged to honor the wisest among us by meeting them where they can connect through music, theatre, and dance. Music Around Town works with senior living communities, senior centers, and other senior programming to arrange performances all year long.
