Remembering Jim Spangler

Jim and Patt Spangler were longtime supporters of FIM and the Flint Symphony Orchestra, and their generosity and passion for the arts have greatly enriched our community.
Unfortunately, Jim died unexpectedly in January. We are deeply saddened by his loss and fondly remember the countless ways he and Patt tirelessly supported FIM over the course of his lifetime.
“Jim was a kindred spirit and eternal optimist,” says FIM President and CEO Rodney Lontine. “I’ll miss that twinkle in his eyes and excitement for life.”
He was a devoted leader, philanthropist and advocate for the arts. In addition to his work as President and CEO of Helping Hand Nursing Services, he was a dedicated community servant who gave generously of his time to non-profit boards, including a 15-year tenure on the FIM Board of Trustees.
In 2018, he received the Mrs. J. Dallas Dort Award in recognition of his substantial contribution to FIM. The award acknowledges those who go above and beyond to support FIM and the performing arts.
Dallas Dort, who carries on the namesake of Marcia Webb Dort, for whom the award was named, says that there was something very special about Jim, and the loss is deeply felt.
“It’s hard to do justice to Jim and all he did for the FIM, but it starts with love. Jim loved the Flint Institute of Music, and he had a special love for the FSO. He loved the FSO, and the FSO loved him back,” Dort says.
Jim was a passionate supporter of classical music, which had a lasting impact on our mission. He led multiple fundraising efforts and special projects as a member of the board, and he served as Chairman of the Artistic Advisory Committee for the FSO. One of his proudest accomplishments as a board member, though, was his leadership in the creation of the beloved FSPA Faculty Concert Series, which continues to showcase our talented faculty in free performances for the community.
“He was always enthusiastic about the next great symphony season or special FIM fundraising event,” Lontine adds.
“He leaves a lasting legacy of generosity and support of FIM and the arts. He will be missed.”
The steadfast support of donors like Jim and Patt will continue to inspire for generations, and Jim’s light lives on in the creativity and joy he helped make possible.
