About the Opportunity

FIM is seeking an experienced Director of Development with a passion for the performing arts. This is an exceptionally exciting time to join the External Relations Division leadership team, with an opportunity to develop and oversee fundraising activities in alignment with the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic plan including its equity and inclusion goals.

This role reports to the VP of External Relations and acts as development team leader overseeing the Annual Fund, Year-end Appeal, Season Sponsors, and Special Event Fundraising programs. The Director of Development serves as an institutional thought partner in areas of patron development and engagement working in a patron-centered model to support a seamless patron journey from first touchpoint to a long-term relationship with FIM.

Specific Responsibilities and Qualifications

  • Develop and lead comprehensive campaigns to meet annual budget goals including major gift cultivation and stewardship, digital campaigns, annual fund and year-end appeals, strategies for program sponsorships, and special events
  • Manage development staff and budgets, aligning with strategic planning and implementation of other division and organizational development efforts, and striving for high levels of motivation and commitment to FIM.
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 80 donors and prospects, soliciting and closing approximately 20 five- to six-figure gifts for general support, sponsorships and special initiatives each year.
  • Work closely with ER division team to develop related communications, collateral and multi-channel marketing campaigns to achieve fundraising program goals.
  • Supports development and utilization of the systems and processes for recording, acknowledging, and reporting gifts and pledges, and complying with sponsor and donor recognition, audit requirements and government regulations.
  • Working closely with Director of CRM & Analytics, support and guide the development team to strengthen donor tracking systems, including prospect management and research, portfolio management, sponsor benefit fulfilment, and stewardship plans.
  • Support VP External Relations on philanthropic activities and provide strategic advice on all aspects of the four executive staff’s relationships with current and prospective donors, including their personal portfolios of 40-60 donors.
  • Serve as a spokesperson on behalf of FIM when directed by the VP of External Relations.
  • Advise the VP External Relations on events FIM leadership should attend, and about other fundraisers and events that might further the mission and visibility of the organization in the community.
  • Attend concerts and functions as required, including performances and events in the evenings and on weekends, as assigned by VP External Relations and as necessary for donor cultivation and stewardship.
  • Lead a team of development staff and work with them to establish annual work plans to achieve annual fundraising revenue goals.
  • Train, mentor, and conduct performance reviews for direct reports with the goal of building a strong team of development professionals that work cohesively within the ER Division and across all FIM divisions to further the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Identify and create opportunities for professional development for direct reports and participate in opportunities within the field to network, learn from peers, and stay abreast of industry changes and challenges.
  • Under the direction of the Vice President of External Relations and V.P. Finance and Administration, assist with the creation of annual department expense budget and actively participate in reconciliation efforts.
  • As an External Relations division leader, participate in ongoing improvement and maintenance of organization wide CRM ensuring staff training/utilization of the donor/development system functionality.
  • Maintain positive relationships with internal and external constituents, including key community members, patrons, vendors, consultants, volunteers, Trustees, musicians, artists, faculty and staff.
  • Provide support for the Vice President of External Relations as needed and represent the FIM at meetings as necessary.
  • Serve as point-person for cross-division development and special event meetings as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 5 – 7 years of experience in a significant fund development role in a complex non-profit organization, preferably in the performing arts.
  • Proven ability to secure major gifts and to interact successfully with donors maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
  • Possess a passion for supporting the performing arts, and an ability and willingness to learn FIM history, mission, and programs.
  • Excellent communication skills coupled with strong writing and presentation skills.
  • Proven experience managing and developing a team of professionals with ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of colleagues, volunteers, patrons and donors.
  • Experience with a complex CRM and integrated data management system. (Tessitura experience an asset).
  • Ability to travel periodically and to work evenings and weekends as required.
