The millage ensures that all Genesee County students, regardless of their zip code, age or background, can access rich learning opportunities and experiences beyond the classroom.
The millage also supports unique hands-on education and access to art, history and science that you can’t get in books, on TV or on the Internet.
FIM offers on-campus experiences and field trips for students of all ages, families, adults and seniors as well as educational programs that travel to local communities across the county.
Access to art, history and science at institutions like the Flint Institute of Music, Sloan Museum of Discovery, Longway Planetarium and Flint Institute of Arts improves Genesee County residents’ quality of life, creates jobs and pumps money into our local economy.
Genesee County’s cultural institutions house world-class art, artifacts, exhibitions and experiences not available anywhere else in the world. These could have been lost without the millage.
Genesee County residents enjoy free general admission to the Sloan Museum of Discovery and the Flint Institute of Arts, 50% off Longway Planetarium, as well as 30 to 75% off programs, admissions and special events at other Flint cultural institutions.
In addition to a wide variety of free performances and community programs, Genesee County residents save 50% on Movies at the Capitol Theatre, and 30% on tickets for FIM Season programs held at FIM Whiting Auditorium, FIM Capitol Theatre and FIM Elgood Theatre.
This millage costs the average Genesee County homeowner just $9 per month to keep the county’s world-class cultural institutions available to children, schools, families, seniors and the public.
When voters approved this millage in 2018, Genesee County and the Flint Cultural Center promised they would track every penny, and they have kept their promise by tracking every dollar collected or spent publicly online to ensure taxpayer dollars are spent wisely.
Funds generated by the millage stay in Genesee County and all funds are subject to annual independent audits to promote transparency and fiscal responsibility.
