At FIM, it’s not enough just to create and program excellent performances. We want to inspire the next generation of artists, performers, and lovers of the arts. We know you know that the arts are an important part of nurturing the whole student. They help hone critical thinking skills, sharpen social skills, and increase a student’s sense of self and cultural awareness. Every encounter with the arts has the possibility to inspire new ways of thinking, seeing, and being. And we think those are rights every student should enjoy.

That’s why we provide free schooltime performances for educators, and we keep resources on hand to assist with transportation or any other obstacles that may prevent your classroom from coming. Please take a look at some of our programs and let us know how we can be part of your classroom journey this year.

Additional FIM opportunities

Hocus Focus™ is a creative instructional approach to support the learning of students with varying degrees of educational challenges and abilities including autistic, cognitively delayed, emotionally disturbed, and learning-disabled students. The activities are motivational, promote positive self-expression, and reinforce many key skills needed for student success.

For over a decade, FIM has worked with Dr. Kevin Spencer, sending him and his unique performance-based therapy into our local schools. Dr. Spencer and his magic tricks can amaze any audience of children (and adults), but his specialty is working with our special needs populations. In 2025-2026 FIM is expanding Dr. Spencer’s residency, hoping to engage more students and provide professional development for current and pre-service teachers about arts-informed instruction and methods of measuring growth and achievement in special-needs populations.

The Troubadours are back with a brand new show for the 2025–2026 school year! Set sail with the Troubadours as they journey across the sea, befriend a pirate, and find themselves thrown backward in time! To return to 2025, they must master “polyphony” — the musical magic of weaving two or more melodies together at the same time — and play in harmony to chart their course home.

Beloved by teachers and students alike, this program gives students a rare opportunity to experience a live performance by professional performers who are part of the FIM staff and the Flint Symphony Orchestra.
