Carnegie Hall Lullaby Project

In 2015, the FSPA was one of just 15 arts organizations in the US invited to participate in the Carnegie Hall Lullaby Project (Carnegie Hall). The project invites young pregnant women and mothers to work with professional artists to write a personal lullaby for their babies, strengthening the bond between parent and child. The lullabies are then professionally recorded and shared with the mothers’ families and friends. They are also shared through the Lullaby Soundcloud.

So far, 69 Flint lullabies have been created and can be heard by clicking below.

ABT

The Dance Division is proud to include the AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE ® National Training Curriculum, a breakthrough 9 level program that combines high quality artistic training with the basics of dancer health and child development. The ABT® National Training Curriculum consists of a comprehensive set of age appropriate, outcome-based guidelines to provide the highest quality ballet training to dance students of all ages and skill levels. 

Community Partners

The Flint School of Performing Arts is dedicated to being an active part of the community. As part of our mission “Music and Dance for Everyone,” we work to transform lives and build community through partnerships with organizations that share our passion.  These programs provide access to music, theatre, dance, and creative arts instruction for children, teens, and adults who may not otherwise have opportunities to participate in high-quality arts education.

Early Childhood & Elementary Education

FSPA partners with schools and early childhood programs to introduce young learners to music, movement, and creative expression. These programs support developmental growth while fostering creativity, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

Community Youth Programs

FSPA works with community organizations to provide year-round and summer arts programming for children and teens. These programs offer creative outlets, mentorship opportunities, and positive enrichment experiences outside the school day.

Higher Education Partnerships

FSPA collaborates with local colleges and universities to expand access to arts education and provide opportunities for continued artistic growth.

Free piano and guitar instruction offered to university students, culminating in a semester-end showcase performance.

Correctional Education Programs

FSPA brings arts education into the Genesee County Jail as part of the IGNITE program, using music instruction to support personal growth, self-expression, skill development, and rehabilitation. Currently, FSPA faculty offer individual piano and guitar instruction to inmates who have completed sessions in Music Therapy.

Some partnerships focus on removing barriers to participation and helping students access arts education opportunities.

FSPA collaborates with Sphinx Overture to support scholarships, student participation opportunities, performance experiences, and arts education access initiatives.

Music & Movement for Early Learners

Head Start and the Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) are tasked with improving kindergarten readiness for Flint four-year olds. The FSPA shares a commitment to their success. All children in these programs are from families with identified risk factors that may impact how well they learn. Due to Flint’s water contamination and the attendant health problems that may affect some children for years to come, these programs are crucially important. In 2016-2017, the GISD found that after one school year in these programs, there is a 13 – 18% gain in the number of children who are meeting or exceeding the readiness goals. (language and literacy; cognition and general knowledge; perceptual, motor and physical development; social-emotional; and approaches to learning). FSPA’s Music & Movement for Young Learners Program curriculum aligns with these goals while providing a developmentally appropriate introduction to music and dance.

Working with both the Genesee Intermediate School District and GCCARD, we will provide a series of five sessions that include both music and dance instruction and take place at the FSPA. We estimate 48 – 56 classrooms will travel to the FSPA to take advantage of our faculty, instruments, and facilities. We anticipate 786 – 896 children will participate with approximately 45 – 50% from North Flint. Through other grant resources, we will provide an additional eight Flint GSRP classrooms with weekly in-school music sessions.
