We believe that diversity is what makes the arts – and all of life – interesting, challenging and noteworthy. That is true all year-round, of course, but in honor of Black History Month, FSPA’s annual concert gives special attention to the incredible works of music, theatre and dance that have been created and performed by Black artists over time.

This year’s performance will specifically focus on prominent Black figures in the Flint community. “It’s important to recognize the powerful impact that local figures have had on our community and beyond,” says Lateena Martin, the FSPA voice instructor and performer who is leading efforts to organize the concert. Students of all backgrounds will take the stage to honor these figures in a moving performance dedicated to their enduring legacies.

Martin coordinates the annual program with help from other FSPA faculty and administration, including fellow FSPA instructor Danyelle Hillman and FSPA Program Director, Dare Stogner. “The parents of the students have also been a tremendous help, showing commitment and enthusiasm that I deeply appreciate,” she says.

Though she didn’t start the Black History Concert, Martin is happy to work with her colleagues at FSPA to sustain the tradition. “Growth and progress require effort, and while I may not be the ‘perfect’ person for the job, I have the heart to do my best to ensure that everyone involved in this program shines.

“Ultimately, what I want people to take away from this concert is the knowledge that greatness exists right in their own community,” says Martin. “I hope it inspires them to believe in their own ability to create something meaningful and impactful.”

The concert takes place on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. in MacArthur Recital Hall. Tickets are $10. Genesee County residents save 30%.
