Celebrate 50 Years of The Nutcracker

Celebrate 50 Years of The Nutcracker
It is unlikely for a theatrical production to run for 50 years. Broadway’s longest-running show, at 35 years, was The Phantom of the Opera, an overnight success and cultural phenomenon. For a ballet like The Nutcracker, whose opening reviews at its 1892 St. Petersburg premiere included such scathing criticism as, “It’s a pity that so much good music is wasted on such nonsense,” to enjoy its 50th anniversary in Flint is remarkable. More remarkable still is how rare a gem FIM’s production is, thanks to its deep roots and community connections.
Bridging Genres

Bridging Genres
Historically, the mixing of genres has been method of innovation in the musical world – like rock and roll (a combination of blues, R&B and country), jazz fusion (jazz harmony and improvisation with rock, funk and R&B) and symphonic metal (exactly what it sounds like). The Hip Hop Orchestra Experience draws from this concept of hybrid genres, taking seminal works of Mozart, Bach and Beethoven and blending them with funky and rapid-fire hip hop rhythms for a completely unique concert-going experience.
Emerging Choreographers Inspires Dance Innovators

Emerging Choreographers Inspires Dance Innovators
In February, the Flint School of Performing Arts (FSPA) dance department will present its Emerging Choreographers Showcase, which develops and spotlights the creative talents of high school dancers. An outside adjudicator will attend the February showcase and select one of the pieces to appear in both performances of Festival of Dance, May 2 – 3 at the UM-Flint Theater.

Music Therapy

Music Therapy
The FSPA’s music therapy services are provided by board certified music therapists (MT-BC’s), all of whom have clinical experience using evidenced-based musical practices to address health. Using the science of how music affects the brain and other areas of the body, the music is used to address non-musical goals such as: cognitive, physical, social or emotional needs. Sessions may include: improvisation, songwriting, group instrument play, music and movement, and structured music listening. No musical experience is required for individuals receiving the music therapy! Sessions takes place at the Flint School of Performing Arts and nearby community schools/facilities. Sessions are available for adults and children both in individual and group sessions.
