Menopause 2 Promises a Full House of Friendship and Fun
Marcy Potter, long-time Flint resident, says that going to the theatre is one of her favorite things to do. Her husband grew up in the College Cultural neighborhood, where the couple still lives, and together they are enthusiastic supporters of the Flint Cultural Center.
“We try to go to as much as we can because it’s something really positive Flint has to offer,” says Potter, who was among the first to purchase a ticket package when FIM revealed its 2024-25 season. While they may look forward to attending most events together, there’s at least one show this season for which Potter is happy to trade her husband’s company for some female camaraderie.
Menopause the Musical 2: Cruising Through “the Change,” is the hilarious sequel to Menopause the Musical, which left a sold-out audience in stitches at Whiting Auditorium two years ago.
“It was such a funny show. It made me laugh and feel really good,” said Potter of the 2023 Menopause presentation. “It was so spot-on about what women go through.”
While menopause is a life stage every woman experiences the subject is seldom talked about openly. That’s where Menopause shines. It uses humor and heart to explore the highs and lows of “the change,” making it a relatable and uplifting experience for women everywhere.
“I don’t know how most women are, but I don’t really talk to my husband about those things,” says Potter. “I don’t think it’s hard to talk to women about those things because we all have similar experiences – but the way they did it, the humor made it so relatable that it might even help men understand what the experience is like.”
Still, Potter will leave her husband at home in favor of some solidarity with her gal pals and a theatre full of (mostly) women to share a good laugh in the face of an experience that’s rarely funny in real life.
The story follows a group of friends as they set sail on a cruise, turning everyday challenges into laugh-out-loud moments. The catchy songs, inspired by popular hits from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s are energetic and familiar, and the characters’ experiences remind audiences they’re not alone in this journey.
In fact, the journey is one that may even be best traveled in groups. Rybicki Tours is a travel service that provides curated daytrips for seniors primarily in the Detroit Metro Area, and they’ve added Menopause 2 to their list of upcoming adventures. Operations & Tour Manager Laura DeChelbor says that dinner and a show is a favorite activity among her tour groups because the fun, convenient experiences are a great way to get out of the house and socialize. And although it wasn’t for the Menopause musical, DeChelbor says she’s had Whiting Auditorium on her radar since the group’s last visit. “I have heard such great things about Menopause 2 and have been looking for another performance to bring our group back to Flint.”
And if the Menopause return visits from patrons like Potter mean anything, we’re guessing Rybiki’s travelers will be begging to come back again and again. From the gut-busting one-liners to the hilarious musical numbers, this show is guaranteed to connect and uplift everyone who attends, as it proves that sometimes laughter really is the best medicine.
