Position Summary

The Communications and Public Relations Coordinator is part of the Marketing team. The Communications and Public Relations Coordinator will work with the team to create and execute a plan that ensures the institution’s programs and events are given a public relations component. This position will work a flexible schedule that will allow them to meet the administrative obligations of the position as well as the public relations components that occur outside the traditional business day.

  • Collaborates with Marketing Department Administrator to establish and publish timelines for communication plans
  • Writes and distributes internal and external institutional documents including but not limited to: press releases, television and radio spots, letters, etc.
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining all social media (5 Facebook sites, Twitter, Instagram)
  • Maintain (data entry) community event calendars
  • Serves as institution’s representative at community organization meetings and communitywide public events
  • Responsible for scheduling institutional representatives for interviews and event speaking opportunities
  • Coordinates and transports as needed FIM representatives to speaking engagements
  • Maintains media archives
  • Attend institution’s performances and special events
  • Proofreading
  • Copy editing
  • Secure consistent and quality media placement and news stories in short-lead, regional and long-lead outlets
  • Build and maintain positive and engaging relationships with media (print, broadcast, online)
  • Ability to manage multiple PR campaigns simultaneously and prioritize the institution’s public relations needs with a positive and proactive attitude
  • Responds to or delegates all general PR telephone and e-mail inquiries from the general public and the press
  • Writes television and radio spots
  • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public or Media Relations, Journalism
  • One (1) to two (2) years of relevant work experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills--AP style proficient
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities
  • Proven interpersonal relationship skills
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of internal and external staff/board/patrons/vendors
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to maintain a professional manner when under pressure
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel and PowerPoint) programs
  • Ability to manage multiple projects effectively
  • Social media savvy with an understanding of emerging platforms, technology, best practices, and experience developing content for blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social tools, to tell stories and promote events
  • Forward thinker, who is constantly looking for new ways to promote and enhance campaigns
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds
  • Photography experience a plus
  • Must have valid Michigan Driver’s License
  • Ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to attend early morning, evening and weekend events as required
